Learn the art of Circlesongs and Collaborative Vocal Improvisation (CVI) in our upcoming 5-week All-Levels Course. Through fun musical games and improvisation techniques informed by Rhiannon’s Vocal River and Bobby McFerrin’s Circlesongschool, and Brazil’s Música do Círculo, you will gain the experience, knowledge, and skills necessary to participate in or conduct in Circlesongs and Collaborative Vocal Improv groups around the world.

In our All-Levels class, each Saturday we will explore the building blocks and skills that allow us create and collaborate within a group or community. We will learn to express our unique voices safely through supportive exercises that help us move through creative blocks and performance anxiety, as well as methods to support and facilitate the process for others. We will develop valuable musicianship skills, and play fun games that foster mindfulness, connection, and presence.

This course is open to new singers as well as experienced musicians and improvisers looking to improve their musicianship and improvisation skills through small ensemble forms and integration of theory through embodied practice. Participants will have the opportunity to perform for the community (optional) at the end of the course.

Already have some musical or improv experience? In the Level 2 - Intermediate group, dive deeper into the Circlesongs concepts introduced in our level 1 (All-Levels) class, as well as explore how to improvise with smaller group ensembles. Develop your musicianship and confidence creating spontaneous, collaborative musical compositions, and how to lead and conduct others in the process.

These classes are offered through the City of Encinitas’ Cultural Arts program. Our first round of classes sold out, make sure to reserve your spot in advance!

What will We Learn?

  • Play fun games that foster connection, collaboration, listening, and presence.

  • Learn new techniques and tools to add to your improviser's toolbox.

  • Practice Non-Verbal Communication and Conducting techniques to make facilitating groups fun and easy.

  • Further develop your human instrument: singing, beatboxing, and body percussion.

  • Develop your Musical Fluency through Rhythm, Melody, and Harmony practices.

  • Participate in group facilitation, cooperation, and shared leadership models.

  • Yes! The Level 1 Circlesongs course is the perfect environment to begin to get in touch with your own unique voice and creativity, and be supported in an inclusive way. Circlesongs provides a safe, invitational container that allows you to go at your own pace and level of comfort. You will be gently encouraged to explore and push your own boundaries and you will have the opportunity to explore your relationship to new experiences and discomfort, but every activity is entirely optional so you can participate as little or as much as is appropriate for you.

    The only 'requirement' is a desire and willingness to open and connect with your voice, your body, and the group.

  • Yes! Learning happens cyclically: concepts are introduced and revisited weekly, exploring the same topics on a deeper level or from a new perspective. You don't have to worry about being left behind or missing out on a core idea or skill. Everyone learns at their own pace and growth happens non-linearly. That being said, this is a collective experience and we grow together as a group over the 6 weeks - if you anticipate needing to miss more than 2 sessions please contact us before signing up.
